Karina participated as a professional dancer from the third to the ninth season, taking her initial break during season 10. She then competed in a stretch of nine consecutive seasons before pausing again in season 20. At that juncture, she shared her intention to explore other thrilling projects, including penning a book.

She made two more appearances before officially departing DWTS following season 22.

After stepping away from the show, Smirnoff appeared on E!’s Famously Single and returned to professional dance. In 2017, she discussed her choice to exit the ABC program, confessing she does “miss the show” and remains open to a possible return.

“Dancing with celebrities offers a unique experience where you become more than just a dance partner—you’re their mentor, therapist, and biggest supporter,” she explained to Fox. “However, performing with a professional partner brings its own dynamic, as they match your skill level, creating a different kind of performance. I missed that aspect when I wasn’t doing it during my time on the show.”
