New 'Grocery Buddy' Initiative Supports Families Overlooked by SNAP Benefits

A Chicago-based nonprofit is addressing the disruption in SNAP payments by establishing “grocery buddies” to assist those in need.

Alicia Spradley, who leads Plate and Pathways, explained that the process is straightforward: individuals can either offer to donate food or gift cards, or they can reach out if they require assistance.

The strain on food banks due to the suspension of SNAP benefits is significant, and the organization is working to fill these gaps.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the number of emails and social media messages from individuals eager to support us,” Spradley shared. “Many have committed to delivering groceries on our behalf as well.”

This informal buddy system has effectively linked community members, ensuring that families impacted by the government shutdown receive necessary food supplies. Spradley noted that some volunteers go the extra mile by delivering groceries to elderly individuals who cannot endure long waits at food banks.

“My daughter, she works with me as well,” she said. “And she’s just like, ‘Mom, this is so amazing. I did not realize the feeling that I would have helping other people, especially in such a time in need.’”

The timeline for 42 million Americans to receive their November SNAP benefits remains uncertain as the government shutdown stretches on. A tentative deal to reopen the government would fund SNAP and end the ongoing legal battle over payments to recipients.
