A shocking incident unfolded in Tennessee where a grandmother was set alight by her own grandson. As officers arrived on the scene, the woman, struggling to breathe, reportedly identified her attacker, saying, “Chris did it. He poured gas on me. He’s lost it,” as per the police reports.
The victim suffered burns covering more than 70% of her body. Tragically, her family has made the difficult decision to remove her from life support.
Authorities revealed that 39-year-old Christopher Medula confessed to pouring gasoline on his grandmother and igniting it with a “Bic style lighter” inside a camper located in Hamilton County. This horrifying event occurred on Tuesday afternoon, as detailed in an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.
In his statement to the police, Medula reportedly admitted, “I poured gas on her,” later adding, “I had to do it. She was evil. She raped me.”
A nearby resident who witnessed the aftermath told police that he observed Medula leaving the camper as it caught fire, followed by his grandmother, who emerged severely burned. According to the affidavit, Medula allegedly confessed to holding the camper door shut to trap her inside. The situation was defused when a neighbor arrived with a firearm, instructing Medula to lie on the ground until authorities arrived.
“She’s the devil,” the neighbor recalled Medula saying, according to the affidavit. “I’m Jesus,” Medula allegedly told him.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the grandmother lying in a driveway with her clothes “completely burned away” and third-degree burns covering her body. A neighbor had placed a blanket over her as she struggled to breathe and spoke to police.
“[The grandmother] was able to give deputies a statement, recorded on body worn camera … between her labored breaths,” the affidavit says.
Police found the “cigarette lighter” that Medula is accused of using to light his grandmother on fire inside his pocket. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated arson for the alleged fire attack. He was being held at the Hamilton County Jail on a $1 million bond Wednesday with his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 17.
