At the Singapore premiere of “Wicked: For Good,” an unsettling moment unfolded when a man forced his way past security on the yellow carpet, heading straight for Ariana Grande.

WASHINGTON — Marissa Bode, a star of “Wicked,” has spoken out following a concerning incident involving her co-star Ariana Grande at the film’s premiere.

The situation occurred during the Singapore showing of “Wicked: For Good,” the second chapter of the movie-musical series. As fans eagerly awaited autographs along the yellow carpet, a man suddenly breached security and rushed toward Grande. Cellphone videos captured by fans show Cynthia Erivo, another star of the film, swiftly moving from her position beside Michelle Yeoh to intercept the man, placing herself between him and Grande and separating the two.

Following the incident, Erivo and Yeoh were seen providing comfort to the shaken singer-actress.

Marissa Bode, who portrays Nessa Thropp in the film, addressed the incident in a video statement released on Thursday.

“‘But he’s a fan.’ Okay, then they’re a fan and a loser,” Bode said in a TikTok. “Social media brings out the worst in people. Oh did you get your views? Did you get your likes? Guess what you also did. You made somebody feel incredibly unsafe, but just… no remorse.”

“That goes over your head. You’re a bad person,” she said.

Bode also spoke about the issue with parasociality, defined by Cambridge Dictionary as “the connections that people feel between themselves and a famous person they do not know,” particularly at concerts and events.

“I don’t think women, or really anybody, should be expected to move with grace or respond with kindness when they’ve been violated in that way,” she added. “To expect that makes you a weirdo also.”

Bode later clarified in a second video that her comments are about the Singapore incident, but also about “women in the industry in general.”

Johnson Wen, who goes by the online name of “Pyjamamann,” was charged with public nuisance in a Singaporean court, according to BBC News. It wasn’t Wen’s first offense, having stormed on stage alongside Katy Perry, The Chainsmokers and The Weeknd.

Wen calls himself the “troll most hated” on his Instagram page.

BBC News reported that Wen intends to plead guilty and could face a fine of $1,540.

Grande has not publicly commented on the incident, though she shared photos from the movie premiere in Singapore on her Instagram.
