A provisional driver has been taken into custody following a tragic two-vehicle collision in Sydney’s north-west that claimed the life of a pregnant woman.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on George Street in Hornsby, where the pedestrian was hit. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance.

The 33-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, was treated by paramedics before being rushed to Westmead Hospital. Despite their efforts, both she and her unborn baby could not be saved.

At the time of the accident, the woman was walking along a footpath, crossing at the entrance of a car park with other pedestrians.

A Kia Carnival stopped to let the pedestrians cross, but a white BMW driven by a P-plater slammed into the back of it.

The Kia Carnival then struck the 33-year-old woman.

The force pushed the woman to the ground.

The 19-year-old male driver of the white BMW and a 48-year-old male driver of a silver Kia Carnival station wagon were uninjured.

Both drivers were taken to Hornsby Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established shortly after.

About 12.45am today, the 19-year-old BMW driver was arrested at a home on Millewa Avenue in Wahroonga.

He was taken to Hornsby Police Station, where inquiries are ongoing.
