A heated argument about a turkey escalated into violence at a North Carolina grocery store on Thursday, resulting in one man being injured by gunfire.
Officers from High Point Police Department responded to the scene at a local Food Lion where they discovered a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his arm. The initial confrontation reportedly began when a customer clashed with a store employee over a turkey, as reported by WJBF.
Another shopper tried to mediate the situation, which led to a physical confrontation between the two customers. According to police statements, one of these individuals left the scene to retrieve a firearm.
WFMY acquired footage capturing the altercation outside the Food Lion. In the video, the two men are seen fighting, with one pulling out a gun and pointing it at the other’s face while gripping his collar.
Police reported that the confrontation continued outside, culminating in both men exchanging gunfire.
The Food Lion employee involved in the initial disagreement told WJBF that a customer became disgruntled when she informed him that he had to make a $35 purchase to get the heavily-discounted turkey, priced at $4.44.
The employee claimed another customer intervened when the man got in her face, telling him, “That is a woman, talk to me like that.”
“The man was steady tussling, trying to get his gun out his pouch to shoot the other man. When he did finally get the gun, he pointed it at the man’s face,” the employee recalled. “The [other] man was like, ‘Oh, you wanna pull out a gun?’ He come out this door, the other come out that door…and they started shooting.”
One man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Both men were at the scene when officers arrived and were interviewed by detectives.
It is unclear whether criminal charges have been filed in this case. An investigation is ongoing.
