The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made a significant move by expelling several prominent members, citing their involvement in actions against the party’s interests and serious breaches of its constitution.

During the party’s Elective National Convention held in Ibadan on November 15th and 16th, a Fifth Motion was introduced. This motion named a number of influential individuals, including past governors, senators, and top party officials, as subjects of the expulsion.

Party leaders defend expulsions as step toward restoring discipline

According to the motion, the expulsions were advised following the disciplinary measures outlined in the PDP Constitution, which was updated in 2017.

The members affected by this decision include Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, Ayo Fayose, Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, Adeyemi Ajibade SAN, Mohammed Abdulrahman, Mao Ohuabunwa, Austine Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah, George Turner, and Dan Orbih.

In a landmark move to restore unity, discipline, and focus ahead of the 2027 general elections, we have expelled members whose actions were inconsistent with the ideals of the PDP,” the party said in a statement shared on its official social media handles.

The motion underscores the supremacy of the National Convention over all party officers and organs, as clearly outlined in the PDP Constitution.

It also highlights that party membership is voluntary, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but stresses that those who choose to belong must uphold the principles, aspirations and disciplinary codes that bind the organisation.

The PDP asserts that the individuals named engaged in actions that directly favoured opposition parties, including canvassing support against the party’s candidates during key electoral contests.

This decision reflects the PDP’s unwavering commitment to unity, accountability, and principled leadership. Members must align with the party’s mission or face consequences,” the statement added.

A top party official also noted, “We are sending a clear message that anti-party activities will not be tolerated. Every member must uphold our values, or they risk losing their place in the PDP.”

The motion further argued that the conduct of the affected members was not incidental but part of repeated patterns that breached the party’s constitution and threatened its cohesion.

The party is expected to issue a comprehensive statement in due course as reactions continue to build across the political landscape.
