At the same time, a Lincoln Aviator was traveling north on S.R. 33, approaching Groveland Farms Road.
Troopers said the Scion attempted “to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone” and entered the northbound lane.
According to the crash report, the Scion’s driver observed the Lincoln approaching and swerved back into the southbound lane.
The Scion then lost control, rotated and entered the northbound lane into the direct path of the Lincoln, troopers said.
The FHP said as a result, the front of the Lincoln struck the right side of the Scion, causing the Toyota to overturn.
The Scion’s driver – identified as a 16-year-old Groveland girl – and passenger — identified as a 17-year-old Clermont boy – were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Lincoln’s driver, identified as a 75-year-old Lakeland man, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 66-year-old woman, 5-year-old boy and 6-year-old who were passengers in the SUV were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers said there is currently a roadblock for both directions of travel on S.R. 33.
The crash remains under investigation.
The crash comes less than a week after a crash involving a pickup truck and six teenagers in Apopka left three dead and three others seriously injured.
