Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, known for their creative work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the script for Spider-Man: Homecoming, are set to embark on a new interstellar journey. The talented pair has been entrusted with the task of writing, producing, and directing a fresh Star Trek film, with the ambitious goal of reigniting the franchise’s cinematic presence.
However, fans of the J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot might need to adjust their expectations. According to Variety, the forthcoming film will steer clear of continuing the Chris Pine-led timeline. Even with Pine’s involvement in Goldstein and Daley’s D&D movie, this new project will exist independently of any previous Star Trek series, films, or announced initiatives. With plot details securely under wraps, enthusiasts of iconic characters like Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway should prepare for a new direction.
The journey back to the silver screen hasn’t been without its challenges. Since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, Paramount has seen potential projects stall. There was talk of Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Captain Kirk’s father, Quentin Tarantino exploring a 1930s gangster-themed version, and filmmakers Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman even reaching the set construction stage before their projects were shelved. Hawley and Shakman have since moved on, with Hawley focusing on FX’s Alien: Earth and Shakman on Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Back in 2024, two other Trek films were announced: a “final chapter” by Steve Yockey featuring the Pine/Quinto/Saldaña ensemble, and a franchise origin story helmed by Toby Haynes with a script by Seth Grahame-Smith. Unfortunately, these ventures now seem to be in limbo, much like a starship lost in space with limited life support.
Revitalizing Star Trek has become a significant objective for Paramount under the leadership of David Ellison’s Skydance, which took the reins of the studio in August. Goldstein and Daley have already established a productive relationship with Skydance, having collaborated on the upcoming film Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. This new venture, produced under their GoldDay banner, is set to premiere on Apple TV+.
The duo previously directed New Line’s hit comedy Game Night, helmed the Vacation reboot, and contributed writing work to Horrible Bosses and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.
Goldstein and Daley are represented by CAA, Fourth Wall Management, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
