John Whaite, a finalist on “Strictly Come Dancing” and a winner of “The Great British Bake Off,” has candidly shared his struggle with a severe addiction that led him to contemplate ending his life. On Instagram this Monday, the 36-year-old revealed his intense five-year battle with steroid abuse, which has had significant repercussions on his health.

In an emotional post, John disclosed, “I began using steroids during the lockdown period because I was dissatisfied with my reflection. Despite rigorous workouts and a strict diet, I couldn’t achieve the muscle gains I desired.” He recounted that, in hindsight, he realized his body was perfectly normal, but the external validation he received while on steroids made him feel better about himself.

“The truth is, steroids have had detrimental effects on my body,” John admitted. “They have reduced the size of my testicles, and my sex drive has become erratic. At times, it’s excessively high, prompting reckless behavior and a lack of self-respect.”

John further explained that his steroid use might have influenced his decision to join the adult platform OnlyFans. His improved self-image, despite years of battling body dysmorphia and bulimia, played a role in this decision.

He added that steroids could have been one of the main reasons why he joined the adult website OnlyFans after feeling more positive about his figure following years of dysmorphia and bulimia.

The TV presenter captioned the post: “Steroid addiction – the truth. For the past 5 years, I’ve let myself down, I haven’t respected my body or my mind, I’ve put my body image before my own wellbeing, and before time with my family.

“Steroids have made me want to end my life. That stops today. Right now. That stops now. I choose life. I choose health. I choose love. I choose a simpler life.”

It didn’t take long before his famous friends and fans of the star rushed to the comments to share their well-wishes online. Julia Bradbury wrote: “Good luck, John. Putting it out there will hopefully [help] you. Love and health [green heart emoji].” Meanwhile, Olly Alexander shared a series of love hearts, similar to Radio 1 presenter Richie Anderson.

One user penned: “Well done for speaking out, and for admitting your addiction, and for taking that first step towards recovery.” Another agreed: “You’re a beautiful man inside and out, darling. Be strong, you’ve got this.”
