The Dallas Cowboys took to the field on Monday night against the Raiders carrying the weight of a profound loss, as they paid homage to Marshawn Kneeland, who tragically took his own life on November 6. This marked their first game since the heartbreaking event.

In a poignant display of solidarity, Cowboys players donned shirts emblazoned with Kneeland’s likeness and name, while his jersey was respectfully placed in his locker. The Raiders showed their respect by holding a moment of silence at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, in honor of the late player.

Kneeland’s untimely death at just 24 years old, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sent ripples of shock and sadness throughout the football world and deeply impacted the Dallas Cowboys organization.

In the days following the tragedy, the Cowboys organized a candlelight vigil at their practice facility, providing a space for players and staff to grieve together. The team returned to practice on Thursday, steeling themselves for their upcoming clash against the Raiders, their first game since Kneeland’s passing.

Before the kickoff of “Monday Night Football,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott took a solemn moment to honor Kneeland. Prescott bowed his head in a moment of silent reflection, wearing a shirt featuring Kneeland’s face, symbolizing the team’s shared grief and remembrance.

Prescott also wore a wristband that had the words “one love” written on it, which was Kneeland’s favorite quote.

Raiders players wore shirts that had the suicide hotline phone number on them, with the front of the shirt reading “call an audible.”

Kneeland’s No. 94 jersey was hung and displayed on the Cowboys’ sideline as well.

Cowboys players also gathered near the end zone for a prayer before going back to the locker room following pregame warmup, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The outlet reported that 16 players took part in the moment.

The Cowboys fell behind early on Monday after the Raiders opened the scoring with a field goal, but Dallas responded with a field goal of their own to tie the game a 3-3 in the first quarter.

Las Vegas hit another field goal on the following drive and Dallas scored the game’s first touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Prescott to CeeDee Lamb to take a 10-6 lead early in the second quarter. They pushed the advantage to 24-9 at the break.
