During the summer of 2007, Coty Martinez and her then-partner, Jeremy Brooks, embarked on a dramatic and deadly multi-state escape from law enforcement, leaving a series of victims in their wake.

After serving 18 years behind bars, Martinez, now 47, has broken her silence in an exclusive interview featured on Snapped: Behind Bars, which is set to air on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 6/5c p.m. on Oxygen.

Recorded on April 9, 2025, at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee, Minnesota, the interview sees Martinez reflecting on the infamous crime spree and her tumultuous relationship with Brooks.

“I was in love with him,” she admitted in the preview, “yet I was equally terrified. It felt like I was merely trying to survive one moment at a time. I was a victim too.”

Martinez’s feelings towards Brooks are still complex. “I don’t harbor hatred for him,” she confessed. “I wish he had made different choices, but I don’t hate him.”

Her feelings about Brooks remain complicated. “I don’t hate him,” Martinez shared. “I wish he wouldn’t have done what he did but I don’t hate him.”

Reckoning with the past clearly appeared to get to Martinez. She shut down when asked if Brooks has ever tried to contact her.

“I don’t think that that’s important,” she said. “I think I just want to stop.”

A week later, Martinez decided to do a follow-up interview. “I felt kind of unsettled about not being able to address certain things,” she said. “Sort of, like, facing the demon kind of thing.”

What were Coty Martinez’s crimes?

Brooks and Martinez led officers on a nearly 11-week manhunt before being apprehended in Drake, North Dakota. She was taken into custody on Aug. 15. He was caught a day later.

They were charged in the deaths of Patrick O’Dea, 69, and Robert Elliott, 50, in Kentucky. Brooks was charged with strangulation death of Ruth Ouverson, 58, in Minnesota.

“The victims met their demise with a kind of frightening similarity,” former prosecutor Todd Lewis in the sneak peek of the new episode of Snapped: Behind Bars.

Brooks pleaded guilty. He continues to serve a life sentence without the chance of parole in the Kentucky Department of Corrections.

Coty was sentenced to 30 years for her role in the crimes. She is scheduled for release in August of 2027. She will be 48 years old.
