Australia vs England - The Ashes LIVE: Steve Smith is hammered by English rival over stunning attack just before start of first Test

Former Aussie Test star Damien Martyn delivers Ashes prediction

Glenn McGrath has confidently predicted a 5-0 victory, while David Warner is backing Steve Smith to score centuries. It’s all quite exciting! Personally, I can envision Smith securing at least two centuries in the upcoming matches.

I’m predicting a 3-1 win for Australia. There might be a draw or a rain-affected match, and I do believe England has the capability to claim a Test victory. However, Australia undeniably holds the upper hand, especially given their impressive home record. England, on the other hand, hasn’t clinched a Test win in Australia since 2011.

It’s been so long since England’s last victory that the teams have changed entirely. While Stokes and McCullum are unlikely to be short on confidence, starting strong is crucial. The series kicks off in Perth, and then they head to the Gabba for the second Test, which is known for its challenging and fast-paced pitch. If the team isn’t well-prepared, they could face significant difficulties.

Australia is certainly the favorite when considering historical performance, statistics, and home conditions. There are definitely some concerns regarding England’s bowling attack, whereas Australia’s lineup seems well-established, even with Cummins sidelined due to injury.

Both teams have some issues within their batting lineups. From England’s perspective, it’s vital for Root, Brook, and Stokes to score heavily. Root must lead by example, just as Steve Smith will need to do for Australia.

‘I’ll say Australia to win. But the first Test and even the first day is going to be big. If England lose the first Test or say it’s a draw, it’s still about them setting the tone, not just for themselves, but to the crowd, for the supporters, the media and the opposition. They can make a statement and say ‘This is the way we’re going to do things’ and everyone will take note.’
