In a startling incident in Clemson, South Carolina, a driver came under gunfire after honking at another motorist who had abruptly cut him off in traffic. The confrontation unfolded late Wednesday morning at approximately 11:45 a.m. on US 76.

The situation escalated when the driver, after being cut off by a gray sedan, sounded his horn. The sedan then pulled over into the median and halted. As the original driver stopped at a red light on Old Stone Church Road, the sedan pulled up behind him and shots were fired, according to Clemson police reports. The shooter quickly fled the scene thereafter.

Fortunately, the driver targeted in the shooting was not injured. Demonstrating presence of mind, he was able to note the suspect’s license plate number and vehicle description, which he relayed to the police when they arrived.

In a swift response, Anderson County deputies located and intercepted the suspect’s vehicle just 15 minutes later on SC 187 near Interstate 85. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Charles Douglas Mace, Jr., was subsequently arrested.

Mace faces serious charges, including attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a machine gun.

Deputies found an AR-15 style rifle and a handgun, which had been illegally modified into a machine gun, in Mace’s vehicle, according to police.
