Tragedy struck in Indian River County when a sheriff’s deputy lost his life while trying to deliver an eviction notice at a seaside home, according to Sheriff Eric Flowers.

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — On Florida’s Atlantic coast, a sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot during an eviction attempt at a coastal property, as confirmed by the county’s sheriff.

In the same incident, another deputy and a locksmith assisting the police were also shot, Sheriff Eric Flowers reported at a press briefing. The locksmith is currently undergoing surgery and remains in critical condition, alongside the alleged shooter, Flowers stated.

The fallen deputy, identified as 47-year-old Terri Mashkow, had dedicated 25 years to the sheriff’s department, Flowers noted.

The confrontation unfolded in the Bermuda Club area near Vero Beach, where officers responded to evict a woman’s son from her residence. As they entered the home, the son allegedly seized a gun and began firing indiscriminately at the deputies, the sheriff explained.

The other deputy was shot in the shoulder and is recovering, Flowers said.

Vero Beach is more than 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of West Palm Beach.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier acknowledged the shooting during a news conference Friday but didn’t provide further information.

“Just wanted to take a couple moments of silence for the officers that were in the line of duty,” Uthmeier said.
