The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has apprehended three teenagers linked to the death of 64-year-old Roger Borkum.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a statement released on Friday evening, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of three teenagers accused of involvement in the October 19 killing of 64-year-old Roger Borkum.

According to an arrest report accessed by First Coast News, investigations uncovered that the teens assaulted Borkum three distinct times between 9:44 p.m. and 10:48 p.m. on October 19 on Hogan Street. The second attack took place at 9:58 p.m., after which a witness discovered Borkum lying on the ground and contacted the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

When JFRD arrived, they assessed that Borkum did not require medical attention and subsequently left the scene. The suspects returned at 10:48 p.m., inflicted another assault on the victim, and then escaped on foot. Following their departure, another witness found Borkum and dialed 911, prompting a response from both JSO and JFRD.

Borkum was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries four days later.

JSO says that the teens, Marcavion Lacey, 19, Robert Pope, 16, and Justin Curry, 13, have all been charged with murder. Curry was 12 years old on the date of the murder and the state attorney’s office says he was indicted by a Duval County grand jury on Thursday.

The State Attorney’s Office released the following statement regarding the incident:

The juvenile justice system is neither designed nor equipped to handle offenders or offenses of this magnitude. In Juvenile Court, the State must relinquish its authority to the Department of Juvenile Justice, where the available sanctions fall far short of those permitted in Circuit Court — and far short of what is necessary for this crime. By handling this case in Circuit Court, we ensure that it receives the level of accountability, supervision, and judicial oversight that the facts and law demand.

First Coast News would not normally release the identities of minors, but the state attorney’s office has confirmed all three suspects are being charged as adults.
