In a heartwarming display of community support, former Councilman Reggie Gaffney Sr. and his son, Councilman Reggie Gaffney Jr., handed out 800 turkeys, underlining the persistent demand for assistance in their area.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Long before dawn on Saturday, families eagerly gathered on Jacksonville’s Northside, hoping to secure a Thanksgiving turkey. This annual event, organized by the Gaffney duo, has been a cherished tradition for over ten years, bringing holiday cheer to numerous households.

Determined to ensure a festive meal for their families, some attendees patiently waited for hours. Joe Madison, among the earliest to arrive, emphasized the event’s significance for those facing hardships.

“The support from the Gaffney family and their partners is truly invaluable to families in need,” Madison remarked.

This year, the Gaffneys exceeded their previous efforts by distributing 800 turkeys, a notable increase. Both were pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming participation.

“That need is great, you know. It’s a lot of people that’s hurting, a lot of people going through hardship. People need food on their tables — so we just want to give back and make a difference today,” Gaffney Jr. said.

The Gaffney team moved quickly, offloading pallets and directing traffic as families waited patiently.

“I’m glad the good Lord would allow us to be a blessing… and what I’m nervous about is 800 turkeys and so much food — and you’re still gonna run out. That shows the need in Jacksonville,” Gaffney Sr. said.

When asked what they learned from this year’s turkey drive, both said the turnout highlights the need for even more food next year.

“Last year I think we had 700. This year we had 800 — and God willing we will have 1,000+,” Gaffney Sr. said.

“Serving is caring. You know—it’s God’s work. It’s giving back and making a difference. That’s what the purpose of life is: giving back and making a difference,” Gaffney Jr. added.

Families who missed Saturday’s giveaway can reach out to Councilman Gaffney Jr.’s office for more information.
