Central Illinois Mental Health Center Launches Campaign to Promote Underutilized Support Program

PARIS, Ill. (WCIA) — Since its inception in 2020, the Human Resources Center of Edgar and Clark Counties has been offering the Living Room Program. However, feedback from local first responders suggests that awareness of this service remains limited within the community.

This initiative operates around the clock, every day of the year, with the goal of assisting individuals facing mental health crises by linking them with suitable resources.

An open house recently showcased a temporary homeless shelter in Champaign, highlighting community support efforts.

“Individuals can find a secure environment here to work through their emotions and access resources for homelessness, employment, and more,” explained Terra Ogle, director of crisis services.

The program is completely free of charge, inviting those in need to visit its location at 745 East Court Street in Paris, any time, day or night, for urgent mental health support.

“We hear a lot of, ‘Oh, we didn’t know that’s what you do,’ or ‘Oh, we didn’t know that was an option,’” Ogle said.

The HRC’s executive director, Susan Tybon, said it might be because reaching out for support for the first time can be difficult.

“It’s an unknown,” Tybon said. “I think initially it can be hard for people to ask for help.”

But, Tybon said taking the first step can pay off immensely.

“People come here and this is like a gateway into many of the other services we offer,” Tybon said. “They may come for continued mental health treatment or substance use counseling.”

And, she said taking care of your mental health can be especially important this time of year.

“Sometimes people will have to deal with trauma or depression or anxiety around the holidays,” Tybon said. “So, we want people to know that we’re here for you and it doesn’t matter if it’s a holiday. So, come on in and get some needed help.”
