In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic incident occurred on South DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, according to local authorities.

The accident took place just before 4:30 a.m. when a 33-year-old man, driving a Kia sedan, collided with a Chevy sedan near Oakwood Boulevard. The Chevy was carrying two passengers, who unfortunately lost their lives at the scene, as reported by the police.

Both occupants of the Chevy were pronounced dead on-site, police confirmed.

Related: I-94 lanes were shut down for several hours after a light pole fell due to a crash in Northbrook, according to the Illinois State Police.

The driver of the Kia was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he is currently in stable condition. A passenger in the Kia was also taken to the same medical facility and is reported to be stable.

All lanes of southbound DLSD are closed in the area, as police investigate.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. One appeared to be charred.

Southbound No. 6 CTA Jackson Park Express and J14 Jeffery Jump buses are temporarily rerouted via DuSable Lake Shore Drive, 39th Street, Cottage Grove Avenue, 47th Street and DuSable Lake Shore Drive, then resume their normal route, due to the crash, CTA said.

Northbound buses are not affected.

CTA asked riders to allow extra travel time.
