President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated the immediate recall of police officers assigned to Very Important Persons (VIPs) throughout the nation, redirecting them to standard policing responsibilities.
Officers to Focus on Core Duties
In a statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, it was emphasized that police forces are now directed to reassign officers currently serving VIPs back to their fundamental law enforcement roles.
This directive came after President Tinubu held a security briefing on Sunday, attended by senior officials including police, Air Force, army chiefs, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
Police Protection for VIPs to Be Handled by NSCDC
The announcement also outlined a newly approved protocol for those still necessitating security detail.
According to the directive, “VIPs requiring police protection must now request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.”
Shortage of Officers in Communities
The Presidency raised concerns over the shortage of police officers in many areas across the country.
The statement added: “Many parts of Nigeria, especially remote areas, have few policemen at the stations, thus making the task of protecting and defending the people difficult.”
“In view of the current security challenges facing the country, President Tinubu is desirous of boosting police presence in all communities.”
Approval of 30,000 New Recruits
To strengthen manpower, the President has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel.
The statement noted: “Already, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers. The federal government is also collaborating with the states to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.”
Service Chiefs Present at Meeting
Sunday’s security meeting had top service chiefs in attendance, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
