Earlier Report: Florida Deputy Fatally Shot During Eviction Process

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A locksmith wounded in a tragic shooting that claimed the life of an Indian River County deputy succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, two days after the incident.

On Friday, while executing an eviction notice at the Bermuda Club on A1A, three deputies accompanied by a locksmith faced unexpected gunfire from a suspect.

Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow lost her life in the attack, while another deputy, who sustained a shoulder injury, was discharged from the hospital by Sunday afternoon.

David Long, 76, the locksmith involved, suffered critical injuries during the incident and has since passed away.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday that Long had died from his injuries.

In a post on social media, the sheriff’s office expressed its condolences, stating:

“Our hearts are broken once again by this tragic news. David Long was a resident of our community, a dedicated professional who was simply doing his job when he was caught in an unthinkable act of violence.”

“His loss, following Sergeant Mashkow’s, is a reminder of the sacrifices made, not just by our sworn deputies, but by the everyday heroes who assist us. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sheriff Eric Flowers.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect, Michael Halberstam, died from his injuries Saturday.
