European leaders have expressed hopefulness about the recent discussions held on Sunday between the United States and Ukraine concerning the Trump administration’s peace proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb shared on the social media platform X that “progress was made towards achieving a fair and enduring peace” during the talks in Geneva.

However, Stubb also noted, “There are still some issues that need resolution. It is evident that Europe and NATO are the ones to make decisions on matters that affect them.”

European officials expressed optimism regarding talks Sunday between the U.S. and Ukraine regarding the Trump administration’s peace proposal to end the war with Russia.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on the social platform X that “steps were taken toward a just and lasting peace” in Geneva.

“There are still unresolved issues. It is clear that Europe and NATO decide on matters concerning them,” Stubb added.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the EU Commission, said Sunday that the talks in Switzerland provided “a solid basis for moving forward.”

“These are our core European principles moving forward: Ukraine’s territory and sovereignty must be respected,” von der Leyen added in a statement. “Only Ukraine, as a sovereign country can make decisions regarding their armed forces, the choice of their destiny is in their own hands.”

The talks, which occurred in Geneva, were “constructive, focused, and respectful” and  resulted in an “updated and refined peace framework,” according to a joint statement from American and Ukrainian officials on Sunday.

“Both sides reiterated their readiness to continue working together to secure a peace that ensures Ukraine’s security, stability and reconstruction,” the statement added.

On his Truth Social platform Sunday, President Trump asked, “is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine???

“Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Monday that officials from the country have not seen the revised peace plan but are “open” to meet with U.S. officials this week.

The original 28-point proposal, crafted by U.S. and Russian officials, calls for confirming Ukraine’s sovereignty and providing it with security guarantees from the U.S. It also states that Ukraine will limit its armed forces to 600,000 personnel and will be eligible for European Union (EU) membership — but not NATO membership.

Ukraine, which has been decimated by Russia’s multi-year invasion, will also be rebuilt via a U.S.-led effort and using $100 billion in frozen Russian assets.

Russia, meanwhile, would enshrine a non-aggression policy towards Europe and Ukraine and keep Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk and parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, territories which it currently occupies. Russia will also be reintegrated into the global economy via an invitation to the G7, which it was expelled from in 2014 after the invasion of Crimea.

Since talks concluded in Geneva, Zelensky has spoken with multiple European leaders, including Stubb, French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Council President António Costa, the Ukrainian leader said on X.

“Diplomacy has been reinvigorated — and this is good,” Zelensky said Sunday on X. “We expect the outcome to deliver the right steps.”
