Urbana Senior Living Community Introduces Mobile Fresh Air Initiative

URBANA, Ill. — As autumn ushers in cooler temperatures, a senior living community in Champaign County is embracing an innovative approach to outdoor activities — by going mobile. Residents at Clark-Lindsey have discovered a delightful way to enjoy the great outdoors, thanks to the introduction of power carts.

These power carts have become an essential tool for residents, particularly those with mobility challenges. By providing a convenient means of transportation, the carts allow residents to engage in their favorite pastimes without being hindered by physical limitations.

Priscilla Christians, a resident at Clark-Lindsey, expressed her appreciation for this newfound freedom. “The fresh air, oh my, and the sheer beauty of nature and Clark-Lindsey’s gardens make it a gorgeous place for a little ride,” she shared enthusiastically.

The introduction of power carts at Clark-Lindsey is more than just a practical solution for getting from point A to point B. It represents a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents, ensuring that they remain active and connected to their environment despite any mobility issues they may face.

The introduction of power carts brings more than just transportation; it provides a new way for residents to appreciate their surroundings.

Another resident, Kathleen Holden, added that the power carts have given people the option to find joy in a special way.

“Things that I think make all of us human beings happier,” Holden said.

One of those is connecting with others.

‘It’s nice to go with a friend,” Christians said.

Holden added that it has also been nice to get outside and see wildlife, like deer, birds and squirrels.

“You can see life when you’re tootling around on that little scooter,” Holden said.

Godia shared that it’s not just benefiting the resident’s emotional health, but also their physical.

“When we get outside, that helps our body be able to reset. It helps our body to be able to continue processing well. Nature and fresh air releases so many things in the body that help us age well and live well,” Godia said.

Residents shared that they love to cart through the gardens and Meadowbrook Park. However, they try to stay mindful not to get too far.

“I don’t think we’re supposed to take them too far off the property. The battery might run out, for one thing. That would be awkward,” Holden said.

Funding for the power carts came from a late resident’s donation. Clark-Lindsey has three of them residents are able to sign-out and use.
