A growing concern has emerged in DeWitt County, Illinois, just as the holiday shopping season is ramping up. This time of year, when people are frequently out shopping, it’s crucial to be aware of a new crime trend and take steps to protect both yourself and your purchases.

DeWitt County Sheriff Mike Walker has issued a warning about a criminal tactic known as “jugging.” This involves criminals trailing individuals as they exit ATMs or stores, with the intent to steal their money and recently acquired goods.

In response, Sheriff Walker is advising shoppers to be vigilant. He recommends using credit cards instead of carrying large amounts of cash to minimize risk. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of locking vehicles and keeping purchases out of plain sight. This can be effectively done by storing items in the trunk or employing a cargo cover or blanket to obscure belongings from view.
