Three children have been safely removed from the roof of a Perth detention centre after an 18-hour stand-off.

The unrest unfolded when a group of six inmates ascended a building at the Banksia Hill Detention Centre, situated in Canning Vale, within the southern suburbs of the city. This dramatic incident began yesterday afternoon and drew significant attention.

Among the detainees, some wielded fire extinguishers, while others resorted to tearing pieces of tin from the rooftop, adding to the tension of the situation.

Prison officers successfully de-escalated part of the standoff by coaxing three of the detainees down from the roof by the end of the day.

However, the confrontation persisted into the following morning with three remaining inmates continuing their protest.

A spokesperson from the Department of Justice reported that although damage occurred to the education precinct of the facility, fortunately, no injuries were sustained by either staff or detainees.

“The incident at Banksia Hill Detention Centre is now resolved,” a Department of Justice spokeswoman said.

“All detainees are now down from the roof and safely in custody.”

WA corrective services minister Paul Papalia has condemned the actions of the juveniles.
