Lizzo Opens Up About Experiencing Suicidal Thoughts at the Onset of Her Weight Loss Journey

(NewsNation) — At the onset of her weight loss journey, Lizzo revealed that she grappled with suicidal thoughts.

In a Sunday post on her Substack, the Grammy-winning artist shared that her mental health deteriorated as she began losing weight.

“I embarked on my weight loss journey in the fall of 2023,” she explained. “At that time, I was engulfed in severe depression, following a damaging scandal that left me feeling abandoned by the world. The situation drove me to a point where I contemplated suicide,” she confessed. “I ended up isolating myself from everyone I cared about.”

Backup dancers sue Lizzo for sexual harassment

The singer, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, said she stopped trusting people after she was accused of sexual harassment and discrimination in 2023 by several of her former backup dancers, who say she created “a hostile work environment through a wide range of legal wrongdoing, including not just sexual harassment but also religious and racial discrimination.”

“I couldn’t trust anyone because during the scandal, former close colleagues and friends (who I’d been on pleasant or neutral terms), started to come out and make things up about me,” she wrote. “God knows why. I supposed to kick me while I’m down? Fifteen minutes of fame? I guess I’ll never know.”

The “Truth Hurts” singer said she was angry every day over the situation, particularly because she couldn’t defend herself publicly.

“I couldn’t tell the world the truth because no one would believe me,” she said.

Lizzo channeled her anger into exercise

The “Special” performer said she processed her pain through her body and began doing Pilates and “used it as physical therapy.”

She added, “Sometimes I cried after sessions. I found that I had lost some weight in that process, but it wasn’t as significant as it is now. “

Lizzo revealed earlier this year that she experimented with weight loss drugs like Ozempic when she started losing weight.
