A man from Florida has received a prison sentence after driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident with a bicyclist, his blood alcohol level nearly tripling the legal limit.

Glenn Brimmer, aged 46, has been handed a 12-year prison term, as announced by the 18th Judicial Circuit’s Office of the State Attorney on Monday. A jury in Brevard County found him guilty of DUI manslaughter in September.

The tragic incident took place on March 2, 2018, around 7:40 p.m., when Brimmer was driving his Hyundai Veloster along North Atlantic Avenue in Cape Canaveral. At the same time, John Perrin, a 66-year-old bicyclist, was traveling on the same road, leading to the unfortunate collision.

Brimmer’s vehicle struck Perrin from behind, resulting in significant damage to the car’s windshield and a bent bicycle wheel, as shown in photos released by authorities. Deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene following the crash.

Subsequent tests revealed Brimmer’s blood alcohol content was at 0.23. During a field sobriety test, which he failed to pass, Brimmer was heard laughing and exclaiming, “Let’s do it!” before being unable to meet the required standards, according to the criminal complaint.

This evidence was submitted to jurors during the trial, which took place seven years after the collision, authorities noted, citing court closures and “more than 40 motions by Brimmer’s defense attorneys who sought to dismiss the case or suppress evidence” as reasons for the delay.

Deputies said they spoke with a witness who said they saw Brimmer drinking at the Cocoa Beach Pier before getting into his car and “driving in a reckless manner.”

As part of his sentencing, Brimmer was also ordered to pay $750 to reimburse the funeral expenses for Perrin.
