Is it time to call Patrick Fabian instead of Saul? Following Episode 5 of Pluribus, fans have a new reason to cheer, thanks to a thrilling twist involving the beloved actor!
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Episode 5 of Pluribus.
With Thanksgiving coinciding with the usual premiere day for Pluribus, Apple TV made the decision to release Episode 5, titled “Got Milk,” two days earlier. The episode not only unveiled a perplexing milk-related mystery but also featured a surprising voice cameo that has Better Call Saul enthusiasts buzzing with excitement.
In the previous episode, viewers were left on edge as Vince Gilligan’s gripping series ended with Zosia (played by Karolina Wydra) in a life-threatening situation, leaving fans emotionally shaken. The drama unfolded as Carol administered drugs to Zosia, aiming to extract information on reversing “the Joining.” However, this desperate act led to Zosia’s cardiac arrest. The new episode, “Got Milk,” resumes shortly after this intense moment, revealing that Zosia survives but chooses to leave Albuquerque with the Others to recover from Carol’s betrayal. In a recorded message that plays whenever Carol dials 0, the collective reassures, “Our feelings for you haven’t changed, Carol. But after everything that’s happened, we just need a little space.”
For the keen-eared audience, the voice on the other end of the line may have seemed ordinary, but die-hard Better Call Saul fans instantly recognized it as Patrick Fabian’s. Known for his role as Howard Hamlin, the Albuquerque attorney opposite Seehorn’s Kim Wexler, Fabian’s distinctive voice brought an unexpected delight to the episode.
On the Pluribus podcast, fans learned that even Seehorn was unaware that her former co-star would be making the cameo until they shot the first voice recording scene. “The very first take of that, Rhea didn’t know that was coming and that it was going to be Patrick…She was such a professional. She did not break at all,” the hosts explained. “We fully expected her to break. We were all standing around watiing, just giggling in the corner, like ‘It’s coming, here it comes…She heart it, she did her job, she stayed in her business, and then we called ‘cut’ and she said, ‘Was that Patrick?!’ She broke the moment we called ‘cut’ and was like ‘Excuse me, nobody said that was going to be Patrick!’”
Fabian attended the Pluribus premiere alongside other Better Call Saul stars, including Bob Odenkirk, and has been a proud champion of Seehorn’s work. He was also featured in that star-studded Pluribus ad, and let’s not forget Apple TV literally tweeted a tease for Episode 5 using the Better Call Saul reference “Point and Shoot,” a MAJOR Howard Hamlin episode (IYKYK). Eagle-eyed fans also noticed that Carol drank the late Howard’s beloved Macallan whiskey, so while he may not be around in the Pluribus universe, the show is stealthily helping keep his legacy alive.
Here’s hoping we haven’t seen (or heard!) the last Better Call Saul Easter egg in Pluribus, and as always, RIP HOWARD.
New episodes of Pluribus premiere Fridays on Apple TV.
