Georgia ranks 8th in nation for porch piracy, Amazon warns holiday shoppers

ATLANTA (WJBF) – As the holiday shopping season takes off, Amazon is sounding the alarm on the increase in package thefts, particularly highlighting Georgia as one of the most affected states.

According to a recent report, Georgia ranks eighth in the nation for porch theft, with an alarming rate of nearly 8,000 packages disappearing daily. Amazon notes that these thefts often occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with thieves targeting packages soon after delivery.

In response to the surge in stolen packages, Amazon has teamed up with the National Sheriffs’ Association, which represents 3,000 sheriffs across the country, to bolster preventive measures. The company highlights its existing delivery network, which offers tracking tools and real-time updates to help customers keep tabs on their orders.

“You can also provide delivery instructions to have packages placed in a less visible spot on your porch,” explained Amazon Spokesperson Sharyn Ghacham. “For example, you might instruct drivers to leave packages behind a bench or planter to reduce visibility and the likelihood of theft.”

Amazon advises customers to include detailed delivery instructions at checkout, such as asking for packages to be hidden behind a large decoration or planter, to ensure they remain out of sight.

“One thing that customers can do is keep a light on on their porch,” said Ghacham. “So, you know, during the winter season, it tends to get darker quicker. When you have the light on, it does a couple of things. It provides a lot of safety for the driver so that they can see where they’re walking. And then the other thing is when there’s a spotlight on, you know, people who are ceiling don’t want to be on the spotlight. So having your light on is also a way to deter them as well.”

Security experts also advise turning on porch lights, installing Ring cameras or other doorbell security systems, and monitoring alerts to ensure packages aren’t taken.

Here’s how you can protect your deliveries:

  • Track packages in real time through Amazon’s Map Tracking feature on the website or app.
  • Add detailed delivery notes for drivers.
  • Use outdoor lighting and porch cameras.
  • Choose an Amazon Locker, pickup point, or alternate delivery address for added safety.

As holiday orders surge, Amazon urges shoppers to stay vigilant and take advantage of secure delivery options to avoid falling victim to porch pirates.
