New details emerge about Chip Kelly's Raiders firing: 'Botching' playcalls

New details have emerged regarding Pete Carroll’s decision to dismiss Chip Kelly from his role as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.

Earlier this week, the Raiders announced Kelly’s departure, and Carroll explained to reporters that Kelly had been given “considerable leeway” during his brief stint directing plays in Las Vegas. However, on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network added more depth to the situation.

During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Pelissero disclosed that Kelly had been consistently making errors in play calling.

“There were instances,” Pelissero shared, “where Chip Kelly repeatedly botched the play calls. For example, he was supposed to tag a motion so that the receiver would be on the left side, not the right. He often neglected it, leaving Geno Smith at the line of scrimmage thinking ‘this doesn’t look right.’ Furthermore, there were occasions when Chip called a play that was either not part of the game plan or had not been installed at all.”

This revelation sheds light on Carroll’s previous comments to the press concerning his rationale for the firing.

“I gave Chip a lot of leeway because he’s got an extraordinary background and history, and he had such a phenomenal season coming out of Ohio State last year, so we wanted to give him his due and all that,” Carroll said on Monday. “As we continued to grow and come together, we just couldn’t get there. So, I wish him the very best, and I like him and we got along great, but we had to make a tough call.”

Kelly lasted just 11 games in his role amid a disastrous season in Las Vegas.

The Raiders are currently 2-9 with their latest loss coming to the Browns, who were starting Shedeur Sanders for the first time in his NFL career.
