As Thanksgiving approaches, the holiday synonymous with indulgence brings with it a feast of epic proportions. Food is the centerpiece, and Americans embrace it wholeheartedly.
Data from LuckyFarmers.com reveals that, on average, 46 million turkeys are devoured during Thanksgiving. Additionally, the holiday sees the consumption of 80 million pounds of cranberries, 214 million pounds of potatoes, and 50 million pounds of sweet potatoes. Furthermore, 483,000 pounds of pumpkin, 77 million pounds of ham, and 40.5 million rolls are expected to be purchased as families across the nation prepare their festive spreads.
With such staggering amounts of food, one might wonder about the caloric impact of the Thanksgiving meal. The Calorie Control Council estimates that the average American consumes roughly 3,150 calories during their holiday feast.
To put it into perspective, enjoying eight ounces of turkey alone accounts for about 480 of those calories.

“The skin is also very high in saturated fat, which can raise your blood cholesterol level and increase your risk of heart disease and stroke,” says Consumer Reports’ Maxine Siegel.
Mashed potatoes and gravy – 257 calories
One cup of mashed potatoes made with adds up to 237 calories. Mix in the gravy, and it shoots up another 20 calories.
Stuffing – 195 calories
A half cup of stuffing amounts to 195 calories.
“In addition to that rather hefty calorie count, the stuffing contains 480 mg of sodium. Making a healthier stuffing requires just a few tweaks,” says trainer Michael Moody.
Cranberry Sauce – 102 calories
Enjoying a 1/4 serving of cranberry sauce packs 102 calories for eaters.
Pumpik Pie – 320 calories
A slice of pumpkin pie after dinner accounts for 320 calories.
“You’ll also benefit from the beta-carotene in the pumpkin,” said Cathe.com. “Beta-carotenes are good for eye health and your immune system.”
Wine – 125 calories
Choosing a little white or red wine to go along with the fixings will be 125 calories.
“Studies show that alcohol lowers your inhibitions, so you may not make the best dietary choices or you may eat more,” Moody acknowledges.
