Melburnians are being warned to expect major delays and chaos in the CBD this Sunday as police anticipate two protest groups may clash.

This Sunday, the CBD is bracing for a significant influx of people as an anti-mass immigration protest and a counter-rally against far-right extremism are set to take place. The gatherings are expected to draw a crowd of at least 2,000 individuals, making for a bustling day in the city.

The timing of these rallies coincides with the much-anticipated opening of the Metro Tunnel. To mark this occasion, public transport throughout Victoria will be free every weekend from November 30, 2023, until February 1, 2026. This initiative is likely to encourage commuters to take advantage of the no-cost transit system during the weekend.

Adding to the city’s activity, families are anticipated to flock to the CBD, eager to take advantage of Black Friday sales and to enjoy the festive Myer Christmas windows. The combination of these events promises a vibrant, albeit crowded, atmosphere in the heart of the city.

Authorities have issued a warning to the public, advising them to prepare for potential disruptions due to the convergence of these events. Police presence will likely be heightened to ensure the safety and smooth flow of activities throughout the day.

Police have asked the public to brace for disruptions.

“Be mindful of the fact that there will be a lot of traffic in the city, there will be some disruption in the city,” Superintendent Troy Papworth said.

They’ve been bailed while investigators continue to hunt for 19 more thugs.

Papworth said they won’t tolerate any violence on the streets amid fears extremists could hijack the rallies.

“If you do come into the city and you do act violent, then you’re going to be caught and you’re going to be, you may as well spend some time in a police cell,” Papworth said.

From Sunday, police will have the power to stop and search people without a warrant and direct them to leave the city.

Officers can also order protesters to remove their masks – even though it won’t become law until next year.
