Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Stranger Things” Season 5, Episode 4, titled “Chapter Four: Sorcerer.”
Before the latest season of “Stranger Things” debuted on Netflix, the series had delivered just 34 episodes over the span of four seasons. While not an extensive run, it has been enough to develop storylines that some fans found less appealing. A notable example is in Season 2, Episode 7, “Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister,” where Eleven, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, travels to Chicago in search of Kali, played by Linnea Berthelsen, and others with powers similar to hers. This episode was seen as a detour, with viewers expressing disappointment over its lack of resolution. However, Season 5 appears to be addressing this issue.
In the fourth episode of the new season, “Chapter Four: Sorcerer,” Eleven and Hopper, played by David Harbour, embark on a mission into a military base located in the Upside Down. Within a secured room, they uncover Kali, who is connected to a large machine. Although she remains silent, she extends her hand to Eleven, who accepts the gesture.
This brief interaction suggests that Kali will play a significant role in Season 5. Speculations arise about whether Dr. Kay, portrayed by Linda Hamilton, and the military have been conducting experiments on her. Additionally, the whereabouts of the rest of her group remain unknown. Kali’s unresolved storyline from Season 2 left many questions, but it seems viewers are finally poised to receive some long-awaited answers.
The concept of Eleven having a “sister” and a network of superpowered allies who can relate to her struggles is intriguing. Unfortunately, the execution of “The Lost Sister” was criticized for failing to capitalize on this potential. The other members of Kali’s gang were perceived as unremarkable, serving primarily to contribute to the punk rock aesthetic. However, with Kali’s reappearance, the series has an opportunity to fulfill a narrative teased nearly a decade ago.
Stranger Things Season 5 may redeem the show’s worst episode
The idea of Eleven having a “sister” and a bunch of other superpowered individuals who understand her struggle is compelling. Unfortunately, the show squandered that potential with the actual content of “The Lost Sister.” The other members of Kali’s gang aren’t interesting in the slightest, mostly being there to serve up punk rock aesthetics. But Kali coming back provides an opportunity to make good on a tease eight years in the making.
Many theories have circulated before the season’s release that Kali would come back, but there’s been contention as to whether she would be an ally or enemy to Eleven and her friends. Given that she and Eleven grasp hands, it would seem like their sisterly connection is still strong. She’ll probably choose to help Eleven and her friends, becoming a useful ally. Kali has the ability to create illusions, making people think something is there when it’s not. This could prove useful in getting Eleven away from Dr. Kay and the military, as well as fighting against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
Ultimately, Kali’s presence on “Stranger Things” Season 5 could drive home a point that should’ve been apparent to anyone who paid attention back on Season 2. Kali and Eleven show what can happen to people from the same backgrounds who surround themselves with different people. Kali turned to a life of crime, with punks who were largely interested in her for her powers. Eleven found genuine friends who liked her for who she was, turning out much different. It’s nurture over nature. So, just maybe, Kali will sacrifice her life after realizing Eleven has friends she needs to return to.
