A mural at a Sydney train station has been taken down following criticism that it was “AI slop.”

Initially, at Redfern train station, the artwork depicting an Australian Christmas seemed to be crafted by a human artist, featuring familiar symbols like thongs, Santa, and beach umbrellas.

However, upon closer examination, observers realized that the artwork was likely generated by artificial intelligence. Clues included a kangaroo with a koala’s head and an Australian flag inexplicably floating in mid-air.

Additionally, the mural featured a bandicoot-like creature with limbs that appeared disconnected from its body.

The mural attracted significant online attention after being criticized as “AI slop” on the Reddit forum r/sydney.

The term refers to low-quality content created by generative AI, which often contains errors.

“Sydney Trains’ Redfern Station staff have displayed artwork for several years to help create a positive end-of-year atmosphere for our customers,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said in a statement.

“We received feedback about this year’s display and, in response, have decided to remove the artwork,” the spokesperson said.
