Authorities in Oklahoma are currently delving into a perplexing case after a body was discovered in a hospital’s water tank last week. The unsettling discovery was made on November 20 at the Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. According to The Oklahoman, the body was found during a standard inspection of the water-cooling tower.

Police have stated that they are not treating the incident as a homicide at this time. As investigations continue, the identity of the deceased, including their name, age, and gender, has not been released to the public.

In a bid to reassure patients and staff, hospital officials have clarified that the water from the cooling tower does not infiltrate the hospital’s main water supply. The system is designed to remain separate, with the water being chemically treated within a closed-loop system.

The hospital outlined in a statement to The Oklahoman that this closed-loop chilled-water system provides clean, chemically treated water to air handlers and fan coils within the facility. The system functions by transferring heat through heat exchangers at the cooling tower, ensuring that the chilled water does not mix with the tower’s water, thereby maintaining the integrity of the hospital’s internal climate control systems.

“[This] closed-loop chilled-water system supplies clean, chemically treated water to air handlers and fan coils within the buildings. The chilled water loop only transfers heat through heat exchangers at the cooling tower to cool the building and does not mix with the cooling tower water,” officials also said in a statement to The Oklahoman.

According to KFOR, investigators believe the body had been in the water tank for some time before it was found. Foul play is not suspected.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death in this case. This can take several weeks if coroners need to conduct additional testing.
