EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern University announced on Friday that it has successfully reached an agreement with the federal government to reinstate hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding.

This development follows the suspension of federal funding earlier this year by the administration of former President Donald Trump. The freeze was part of a broader investigation into alleged civil rights violations at universities nationwide.

The White House had put a hold on approximately $790 million in federal funding earmarked for Northwestern University.

The university came under scrutiny regarding its management of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and its approach to addressing antisemitism on campus during the previous year.

Northwestern faced questions over its handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations last year and how it policed antisemitism on campus.

Northwestern said the funding it received was driving innovative and life-saving research, like its development of the world’s smallest pacemaker and advancements in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, which was put a jeopardy during the funding freeze.

More information on the terms of the deal between the university and the government can be found here.
