A man from Kentucky has been taken into custody on charges of child abuse after allegedly causing severe harm to his girlfriend’s child during a diaper change last month.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on October 14 when 29-year-old Jorge Jesus Perez-Ramirez was caring for the child. The child had to be rushed to immediate medical care and was later transferred to Norton Children’s Hospital in critical condition, as reported by WLKY.
Medical professionals concluded that the injuries were consistent with pediatric abusive head trauma, which is often the result of shaking or a forceful blow to the head.
Court records reveal that Perez-Ramirez exhibited “extreme indifference to the value of human life” by handling the child in a manner that resulted in injuries characteristic of pediatric abusive head trauma during the diaper change.
Perez-Ramirez was apprehended on Wednesday, as reported by WHAS.
He was charged with assault and criminal abuse of a child 12 or under and jailed on a $100,000 bond.
Police did not release the age of the child or provide any further information about their current condition.
