Jowon Briggs a pleasant defensive surprise discovered by Jets' scouts

In a seemingly understated transaction back on August 20, the New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns. In exchange, the Jets parted with a sixth-round draft pick, while the Browns threw in a seventh-round pick to complete the deal.

Initially overlooked during the offseason, this strategic move has proven advantageous for the Jets as autumn unfolded. Briggs has emerged as a standout performer, stepping into a starting role on the Jets’ defense after Quinnen Williams’ departure to Dallas.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn praised the scouting department for their foresight in bringing Briggs on board. “I thought that was a really good move by our scouting department to bring somebody like that in,” Glenn remarked. “He’s a big man, he’s strong. He’s been effectively stopping the run, which we expected, but what’s pleasantly surprising is his enhanced ability to pressure the quarterback.”

Glenn continued, “We intend to capitalize on that. I’m not saying he’s the next Mean Joe Greene, but he’s been doing a commendable job of disrupting the pass game as well.”

Briggs’ performance on the field has been notable. He is currently tied with teammate Jermaine Johnson II, each recording three sacks, placing them second on the team in this category.

He got Lamar Jackson once last week and has been a key piece in the improved run defense by the Jets recently.

“We knew, particularly coach [Eric] Washington, of his skill set,” Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. “I think, in a matter of time, we’re starting to see exactly what we envisioned. He can really create some one-on-ones and dominate, which you saw last week, getting a sack, collapsing the pocket, and getting that sack.

“He’s playing great ball. I think him and Harrison [Phillips] both are just being really solid inside, which has given us the opportunity to perform well on the outside.”

The Jets downgraded CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (hip) to doubtful for Sunday’s game.

They added WR Allen Lazard (neck) to the injury report and listed him as questionable. … They elevated DB Jordan Clark and DE Eric Watts from the practice squad.
