Meghan Markle found herself under scrutiny and acquired the nickname “Salmonella Sussex” after posting a Thanksgiving-themed video that highlighted a significant food safety oversight.
In anticipation of the holiday, the Duchess of Sussex took to her Instagram Stories, sharing a video where she was seen combining spices in a bowl and applying the blend onto an uncooked turkey.
Accompanying the video, Markle wrote, “Let the ‘game’ begin,” all set to the tune of Bob Dylan’s “Turkey Chase.” She also added a playful turkey emoji to the post.
In a nod to her humor, she added, “Get it? #momjokes.”
However, keen observers quickly pointed out that the 44-year-old was wearing a gold bracelet and ring while handling the raw turkey without any gloves, raising concerns about hygiene.
“She has the worst kitchen hygiene. The ‘domestic’ goddess is clueless. The more she pretends to be a cook, the more fake she shows herself to be. Jewelry rubbing up against the meat, hair shedding and her grubby paws stroking the poor dead bird,” one user wrote on a Reddit thread titled, “Salmonella Sussex.”
“I don’t even put on my jewellery when applying makeup, and I remove them when cooking. Jewelry are known fomites for infections,” added another.
“I’ve cooked multiple turkeys and never put my hand in one like this ffs. She’s a blithering idiot in the kitchen,” commented a third netizen.
“Lordy, she so obviously knows absolutely nothing about cooking or how to work in a kitchen. For the safety of humanity, keep her out of the kitchen,” added a fourth person.
“Aside from the hair, jewelry and bare hands all over that turkey, it’s astonishing how she also had her damn forearms laying across the body of the turkey at times. She might have well been naked and rubbing the darn thing all over herself. What an idiot! It’s such a treat she is getting called out like this,” said a fifth Reddit user.
Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, raw turkey can have Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter and other germs and its juice can contaminate anything it touches.
Page Six has reached out to Markle’s reps for comment but did not immediately hear back.
On Thanksgiving, Markle gave a look into how she and her family — including husband Prince Harry and their two kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet — spent the annual holiday.
The As Ever founder revealed via her newsletter that she was hosting friends and cooking in her and the Duke of Sussex’s $14 million mansion in Montecito, Calif.
“Please know that as I look around my home and see my husband and children, family, dear friends (and also navigate the timing on the turkey and the love and layers that come with hostessing) — I feel grateful,” she wrote.
“Wishing you a Thanksgiving with full hearts and full bellies,” Markle continued.
The family of four also gave back to the community by recently volunteering at Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles to “prepare and package meals for community members experiencing food insecurity.”
