Fans of the iconic ’90s anime Sailor Moon have something new to look forward to, especially since the beloved series is no longer part of Toonami’s schedule.
TeamFourStar, a creative group that gained fame in 2008 for their Abridged series, is offering a fresh take on Sailor Moon. Known primarily for their work on Dragon Ball Z Abridged, they have also put their spin on other fan-favorite anime like Hellsing and Attack on Titan. Now, Sailor Moon has been added to their repertoire, with the debut video tantalizingly titled “Part 1.” This suggests that fans can anticipate further installments, potentially covering more of the same series or other classic Toonami favorites.
The hit YouTube creators behind TeamFourStar have officially unveiled their latest creation in the form of Toonami Abridged | Sailor Moon. The first part of the irreverent, notably adult-oriented abridged version of the beloved anime series was uploaded to the official TeamFourStar YouTube channel on Nov. 19, offering fans a quick, 14-minute trip through some of Sailor Moon‘s biggest stories from its initial anime storylines.
The original Sailor Moon anime, inspired by Naoko Takeuchi’s cherished manga, first hit the airwaves in 1992 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The storyline centers around Usagi Tsukino, a Tokyo middle school student who discovers she is the reincarnation of the Moon Kingdom’s legendary princess. With her transformation into Sailor Moon, she unlocks the powers of others and battles the forces of darkness, securing her place as a timeless hero.
Toonami Abridged: Sailor Moon Brings Adult Humor to the Classic ’90s Anime
TeamFourStar launched in 2008 and rose to prominence thanks to their Abridged versions of various popular anime. Easily the most well-known of these is the Dragon Ball Z Abridged series of videos, though TeamFourStar also produced Abridged versions of other hit anime, including Hellsing and Attack on Titan. Sailor Moon has now joined this list, with the video notably titled as “Part 1,” hinting at either more of the same anime or other classic Toonami shows (if not both) to come.
Based on Naoko Takeuchi’s fan-favorite manga of the same name, the first Sailor Moon anime series premiered in 1992 and immediately cemented its place in pop culture. The series follows Usagi Tsukino, a middle schooler living in Tokyo who learns that she is the reincarnation of the fabled princess of the Moon Kingdom and subsequently uses her newfound powers as Sailor Moon to both unlock others’ respective powers and fight back against the forces of evil.
Although the ’90s Sailor Moon anime series has been a staple of Adult Swim’s Toonami lineup for decades, the show officially left the programming block in July. Where Sailor Moon used to run, it was replaced by double-episode runs of Dragon Ball Daima and Lazarus, with Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Blue Exorcist, One Piece and Naruto rounding out the Toonami summer lineup of shows.
Despite being unable to catch the original Sailor Moon anime on Toonami (for now), fans can still revisit their favorite franchise courtesy of a different platform, albeit in a slightly updated form. Almost as soon as the original Sailor Moon anime left Toonami, the modern remake version, Sailor Moon Crystal, made its way onto Netflix in the United States and Canada. While the classic anime still holds a special place in the hearts of fans, Sailor Moon Crystal is widely considered to be a more faithful adaptation of the original manga, and as such has consistently drawn high viewership averages wherever it goes.
