A New York City man reported being set on fire during an incident on a subway near Times Square early Monday morning. However, police are investigating the possibility that he might have accidentally ignited his own clothing, according to a recent report.

New York City police responded to an emergency call about an ongoing assault at the 42nd Street station in Times Square shortly after 3 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a 55-year-old man with burns on his legs. The man claimed he had been asleep on a subway car of the 3-train when someone set his pants on fire, as per the police statement.

The New York Post reported that investigators discovered charred skin on one of the train seats and burnt paper nearby, providing potential clues to the incident.
