Nonprofit holds donation drive for domestic violence survivors

STATESBORO, Ga. — As the festive season approaches, Safe Haven Statesboro, a nonprofit committed to supporting survivors and combating family and domestic violence, is spearheading a heartwarming initiative. This holiday season, the organization is launching its cherished “Adopt a Neighbor in Need Drive,” aiming to bring joy and relief to those in need.

The annual event is designed to provide a memorable Christmas for the men, women, children, and even pets enrolled in Safe Haven’s programs. “We aim to celebrate everyone in our programs by ensuring they have a wonderful Christmas each year,” explained Kim Billings, the director of public relations at Safe Haven.

Participants in the drive have the option to adopt an entire family or an individual, receiving a customized list of needs to guide their generosity. For those who prefer to contribute in a different way, the organization also welcomes donations of general items for their shelter, including blankets, socks, and bath sets.

This initiative is not just about giving; it’s about transforming holiday memories for survivors into something positive and hopeful. As Billings noted, the drive is an opportunity to help those affected replace past experiences with new, uplifting ones.

Billings said the drive also helps survivors replace holiday memories with more positive ones.

“We just want to provide a safe and happy Christmas to all the people that we’re helping in our programs,” she said. “Living in a domestic violence relationship is some of the scariest and trying times and we just want to take some of those memories and replace them with a good, positive ones, especially around the holiday season.”

The current deadline is Dec. 5 but Billings said that deadline may be extended.

If you cannot give this drive, other opportunities will be available in 2026.

“We do a Valentine’s Day donation drive,” Billings said. “We do it for Mother’s Day. We do it for Easter. So be on the lookout. Check our Facebook page, our social media. We do great things all throughout so you can get involved and adopt a neighbor throughout the different seasons.”
