Governor Pritzker Considers Amendments to Illinois SAFE-T Act for Enhanced Public Safety

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — A chilling incident in Chicago, where a young woman was set ablaze while on a train, has drawn national attention. The perpetrator was a known offender with over 70 past arrests.

“Let’s face it, this isn’t the first appalling crime committed by a repeat offender. These are situations that perhaps could have been prevented without the SAFE-T Act,” stated Tony McCombie, the Illinois House Minority Leader.

This brutal attack has reignited discussions among lawmakers about the potential need to repeal or revise the SAFE-T Act.

Even the governor appears willing to consider changes.

Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said he still thinks the law is sound in principle, but improvements could be made. He said the place lawmakers should start is the Pre-trial Fairness Act.

“The you know, I fell on hard times and I had no choice and then be allowed the opportunity and the resources to not re-offend. I think that’s very important. However, there are some individuals where evidence is a lot stronger, where the crime they committed is a lot more harsh,” said Heuerman.

Heuerman said giving judges more leeway with pre-trial detentions would strike a balance between public safety and support for those accused of crimes.

McCombie said making that changes is a long shot — but it is possible.

“Before I am completely negative and full of cynicism on that issue, we have to remember this was passed at 3:00 in the morning and it had bipartisan opposition. There is bipartisan opposition to it still,” said McCombie.

McCombie isn’t confident though that Democrats will bring SAFE-T Act to the negotiating table when lawmakers return for their normal session. But, she says Republicans have plenty of ideas on how to fix the law and she’s even willing to let Democrats take the credit if a fix is found.

“I don’t care if it is Representative Slaughter’s idea. Take our legislation and run with it. But something has to be done,” said McCombie.
