A Michigan woman, who was pregnant, was discovered lifeless in a national forest last week, leading to her mother and stepfather facing serious charges, including murder, torture, assault, conspiracy, and unlawful detention, on Tuesday.
According to prosecutors, Cortney and Bradly Bartholomew allegedly transported 22-year-old Rebecca Park to a forested area near their residence. There, they reportedly forced her to the ground and removed the baby from her womb, resulting in the deaths of both Park and her unborn child, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Prosecutor Johanna Carey of Wexford County stated that the couple abandoned Cortney Bartholomew’s daughter at the crime scene.
“This is, frankly, evil personified,” Carey remarked.
Park, who was 38 weeks along in her pregnancy, was reportedly last seen on November 3 when she was picked up by a dark-colored sedan, according to her mother. Her mobile phone was discovered shortly thereafter on the road, as noted by CrimeOnline. Cortney Bartholomew reported her missing the following day, and her remains were uncovered on November 25 in Manistee National Forest.
During the Bartholomews’ court appearance on Tuesday, Carey mentioned that the couple had planned the murder in advance, researching their actions before executing their plan at their home. Details about the infant’s whereabouts remain unclear, though police had previously indicated that the child was not present with Park’s body when it was discovered.
Both were charged with first degree murder, felony murder, torture in a place of confinement, conspiracy to commit torture, assault of a pregnant woman with the intention of causing miscarriage or stillbirth, conspiracy to commit that assault, unlawful imprisonment, and moving a dead body, the Free Press said.
The judge denied bond for both.
The courtroom in Cadillac was packed with supporters of Rebecca Park, including Stacey Davis, Bradly Barthlomew’s sister.
“I’m here for Rebecca and her baby,” she told the Free Press. “I’m not here for my brother.”
After Park’s body was found, her fiance, Richard Falor, and sister, Kimberly Park, were arrested. Falor faces drug charges, while Park was charged with tampering with evidence, lying to a peace officer, and false report of a felony. According to the complaint filed in Park’s arrest, she told authorities that the Bartholomews struck her sister “in the head causing a seizure and then took her body away.”
