On December 3, 2025, news emerged that Thomas Markle, father to Meghan Markle, had been hospitalized in the Philippines following a medical emergency that necessitated surgery. Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s brother, informed the Daily Mail of the situation, revealing that their father was urgently transported to a nearby hospital after a sudden illness and was slated for further surgery to remove a blood clot. “Doctors said his life was in imminent danger,” he stated. “We were rushed by ambulance with sirens blaring to a larger hospital in the city center.” He also urged people worldwide to keep their father in their thoughts.
Thomas Markle has faced numerous health challenges over the years. In 2022, he was hospitalized in Tijuana, Mexico, after experiencing breathing difficulties and reportedly suffering a stroke. In 2018, just before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry, he endured two heart attacks. During the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan addressed her strained relationship with her father, expressing difficulty in forgiving him for staging paparazzi photos. “I said, ‘I just need you to tell me and if you tell me the truth, we can help,’ and he wasn’t able to do that,” she explained, as reported by People. “That, for me, has really resonated, especially now as a mother.”
Amid their father’s medical emergency, Meghan — who has been estranged from Thomas since 2018 — doesn’t seem particularly concerned by the unfolding situation. On the Duchess of Sussex’s Instagram Stories, she appeared indifferent, sharing clips from her husband, Prince Harry’s, recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Meghan also, notably, took some time to promote her lifestyle brand As Ever’s collaboration with Compartes Chocolates, and even shared a post teasing the holiday special of her show “With Love, Meghan” on Netflix.
Reflecting on her oldest child with Harry, Meghan remarked, “I look at Archie, I think about this child, and I genuinely can’t imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child. […] So it’s hard for me to reconcile that.” Meanwhile, in a recent update to the Daily Mail, Thomas Markle Jr. shared the positive news that their father is now in stable condition. However, he cautioned that “He is [still] heavily medicated on painkillers and other drugs” and “is pretty much out of it.”
Meghan Markle remains estranged from her father
Over the years, Meghan Markle’s estranged father has endured repeated health scares and serious medical complications. In 2022, he was hospitalized in Tijuana, Mexico after suddenly struggling to breathe and apparently having a stroke. Thomas also reportedly suffered two heart attacks in 2018, right before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry. Addressing her broken relationship with her father in the royal defectors’ infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan admitted that she found it hard to forgive Thomas for lying about staging paparazzi photos. “I said, ‘I just need you to tell me and if you tell me the truth, we can help,’ and he wasn’t able to do that,” the duchess explained (via People). “That, for me, has really resonated, especially now as a mother.”
Referring to her eldest child with Harry, Meghan elaborated, “I look at Archie, I think about this child, and I genuinely can’t imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child. […] So it’s hard for me to reconcile that.” Meanwhile, in an update to the Daily Mail about their father’s ongoing situation, Thomas Markle Jr. gladly reported that he is now in stable condition. Although, as his worried son noted, “He is [still] heavily medicated on painkillers and other drugs” and “is pretty much out of it.”
However, Thomas Jr. believes his old man will pull through with some time and the proper care. He also thanked those who have sent their get-well-soon wishes and messages of support, especially from the U.K. Thomas Jnr. asked everybody to continue keeping his father in their thoughts and prayers.
