Meghan Markle leaves royal fans baffled with her $12 chocolate bars

Meghan Markle has recently introduced a line of $12 chocolate bars, sparking a range of reactions from consumers who are less than impressed with the unique flavors, describing them as ‘insane’ and ‘weird’.

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, revealed these three limited-edition confections, which incorporate ‘signature’ ingredients from her brand, As Ever. These include her renowned raspberry spread and flower sprinkles, aiming to evoke a sense of sweet nostalgia.

The collection features intriguing pairings: milk chocolate with shortbread cookies and bee pollen, white chocolate with flower sprinkles and hemp hearts, and dark chocolate complemented by raspberry spread and sea salt.

Although these offerings appear to target the upscale chocolate market, complete with elegant, botanical-print packaging, the price and unconventional flavors have left some potential buyers skeptical.

One critic expressed disbelief, stating, “She’s got to be joking. $12 for a chocolate bar with strange flavors? Who would spoil chocolate with flower sprinkles and bee pollen? Those should be left for the bees.”

‘There’s NO WAY I’d pay $12 for a random chocolate bar with weeds in it. Gross,’ added the critic.

Another person said on X: ‘The flavours are just cringeworthy! Sticking that raspberry spread junk in one, flower sprinkles in another!’

A third commented: ‘Meghan’s launched her chocolate bars, which will set you back $12 per bar. Insane!’

Another fan baffled by the flavours commented: ‘Was shocked with the flowers!’, while another agreed: ‘Is this true? She really put flower sprinkles in chocolate?’

‘That’s a lot of money for a candy bar,’ one person concluded.

Meghan unveiled the treats in a glossy clip on Instagram, set to the tune of Shirley Ellis’s I See It, I Like It, I Want It.

Hours earlier, she had posted a glimpse of the launch, sharing a video to her Instagram stories of the chocolate mixture bubbling away.

Shortly after, the official As Ever Instagram account shared a photo of the Duchess holding a stack of individually wrapped gifts tied with a green velvet ribbon. The caption teased, ‘Things are about to get sweeter’.

The launch came just hours after the Daily Mail exclusively reported that Meghan’s father had been admitted to intensive care in the Philippines.

Today, it was revealed that Thomas Markle, 81, who has been estranged from his daughter since her 2018 marriage to Prince Harry, has now had life-saving surgery to amputate his left leg below the knee, following a three-hour operation.

His son Thomas Jr said: ‘There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death.’ Meghan, who has been estranged from her father since her 2018 marriage to Prince Harry, has not commented publicly on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Duchess’s Netflix special, With Love, Meghan, which was released this week, has faced a wave of criticism since landing on the platform.

In the one-hour episode, Meghan taught celebrity guests how to make Christmas crackers, while demonstrating the art of gift-wrapping and tree decorating.

However, the series failed to land the way she might have hoped after reviewers in The Times, The Guardian, and the Daily Telegraph delivered their scathing verdict.

Giving With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration zero stars out of five, the Daily Mail’s reviewer Annabel Fenwick Elliott said: ‘It’s the syrupy hypocrisy and our hostess’s deep lack of self-awareness that continue to make her and this show so unlikeable.

‘If only she could lean into her waspish, Type A personality – poke a little fun at herself, even – she could just about be endearing, in a Monica-from-Friends sort of way.’

Meanwhile, The Telegraph’s arts and entertainment editor Anita Singh suggested the episode is ‘quite mad and a little bit sad’ in her one-star review.

The 56-minute one-off episode follows the first two critically-panned series of With Love, Meghan.

The show, which sees Meghan offer hosting tips while she cooks with celebrity friends, was savaged by critics following its release in March – but a second series was released in August.

The show’s launch in March coincided with the unveiling of Meghan’s As Ever brand, which sells products including raspberry jam and flower sprinkles, which she repeatedly promotes throughout the show.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex secured a lucrative contract with Netflix, thought to be worth more than $100million in 2020, after quitting as senior working royals.

Harry and Meghan announced they had signed a new ‘multi-year, first-look deal for film and television projects’ with the streaming platform in August.

Meghan described the deal as ‘an incredible sign of the strength of our partnership’, despite rumours the streaming giant may be pivoting away from her and Harry.

At the end of the trailer, viewers were told to ‘discover more holiday cheer, shop As Ever’.

The new festive range was posted to the asever.com website and features a 43g spiced cider mulling spice kit priced at $16 and a three-pack of spreads in a gift box for $42.
