A dietitian has shared five key practices she avoids when it comes to her children’s eating habits.
The crucial information was posted in a new video on TikTok by user Kristen Lorenz, who is a registered dietitian with over 18 years of experience.
With a following of 57,000 on social media, she frequently offers advice on maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. In her latest post, she highlighted some of her personal “don’ts” as a parent.
“I think it can be helpful,” she stated at the beginning of her video.
One of the primary rules she enforces is not allowing her children to eat snack foods directly from the packaging.
“If it’s a single serving, that’s fine,” she noted. “But if it’s a large bag of chips or pretzels, it should be portioned out into a container.”
‘I don’t use the term “portion” for them, but again, I want them to be registering that, like, hey, this is a snack that I’m having,’ she said.
The next thing on her list was regarding a common choking hazard.

‘I don’t allow my kids to eat grapes or cherry tomatoes in my house without me being around, or unless I’ve cut them in half,’ Lorenz said.
She explained that she had previously been a transplant coordinator, which made her privy to witnessing a lot of freak accidents.
‘Will I still do that before they go to college? Probably,’ the dietician added.
The third thing on Lorenz’s list was that she will never let her children say that they have an allergy just because they don’t like certain foods.
‘I’ve worked in the food service industry for a really long time, and let’s leave the actual allergy claiming for people who have the actual allergies,’ she shared.
‘It is okay if you don’t like the food, just don’t say you have an allergy to it,’ Lorenz continued.
On a similar note, she said that in her house, she doesn’t ‘yuck other people’s yums.’
‘It’s fine if you don’t like a food, but don’t sit there and talk about how disgusting it is,’ she said. ‘Like what you like, it’s fine, enjoy it.’
Last on her list was something she believes was quite common – and that is the fact that she doesn’t let her kids have unlimited access to sodas or juices (stock image)
Last on her list was something she believes was quite common – and that is the fact that she doesn’t let her kids have unlimited access to sodas or juices.
‘They like whole fruit,’ she explained. ‘Obviously pop is not nutritional, and so my kids drink water, they drink milk.’
However, this doesn’t mean that there’s a complete ban on the sugary substances.
‘They are allowed to have juice, they are allowed to have soda on occasion, I don’t make them feel like it is completely off-limits, they don’t have like a complex over it, but it is not something that is their normal, everyday consumption,’ the dietician said.
‘Let me know what you guys do in your house,’ she concluded the clip.
In the comments section of her video, many users seemed to agree with her rules.
‘Love these! It gets me going when people say food is “disgusting” when most often they mean it’s not their taste or different than what they eat,’ one person typed.
Another seconded, ‘I’m 27 and my mom still reminds me I could choke on a grape.’
‘This all sounds really reasonable! I didn’t care too much about juice because my kids were take it or leave it about juice and soda honestly,’ someone else wrote.
A TikTok user commented, ‘No these are great. I definitely started doing the first one because my seven-year-old was going over board and also starting to do bored snacking so I have really gotten strict on those two things.’
