Michael Annett, a former NASCAR driver known for his participation in 436 races across the sport’s three major national series, has passed away at the age of 39 in Mooresville, N.C.

The announcement of Annett’s passing came from JR Motorsports, a team he previously raced for, via social media on Friday. The message did not disclose the cause of his death.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Annett family during this difficult time,” the team shared. “Michael was a vital part of JR Motorsports from 2017 until his retirement in 2021 and played a significant role in our development into the four-car team we are today.”

Annett’s NASCAR career included 321 starts in the Xfinity Series, with 158 of those races being with JR Motorsports.

His career highlight came in 2019 when he clinched victory at the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway, driving the No. 1 Chevrolet for JRM, marking his sole national-level win.

Annett, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, was also a two-time winner in the ARCA Menards Series. He won at Talladega Superspeedway in 2007 and then took the series opener at Daytona in 2008.

“NASCAR is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former NASCAR driver Michael Annett,” the racing body said in a statement. “Michael was a respected competitor whose determination, professionalism, and positive spirit were felt by everyone in the garage. Throughout his career, he represented our sport with integrity and the passion of a true racer. NASCAR extends its condolences to Michael’s family and many friends.”
