Pretrial hearing for Luigi Mangione to resume Monday after court releases new evidence in CEO murder case

NEW YORK — On Monday, Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering a CEO, will once again face the court as a judge deliberates on the admissibility of crucial evidence for his upcoming trial.

The ongoing pretrial hearing is centered around evidence collected following Mangione’s arrest. His defense team argues that authorities seized these items before he was informed of his legal rights.

Recently, the court approved the release of additional evidence, including a to-do list believed to be connected to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Prosecutors have also presented a photograph of a folding knife, which they claim was found in Mangione’s possession.

Additionally, a Greyhound bus ticket under the name Sam Dawson was uncovered. Prosecutors assert that this is one of several aliases Mangione employed. When apprehended, Mangione allegedly identified himself as Mark Rosario, corresponding to a counterfeit New Jersey driver’s license.

As the pretrial proceedings continue, Mangione’s lawyers are pushing for the exclusion of this evidence, contesting the legality of how it was obtained, as they prepare for the impending murder trial.

His lawyers want the ghost gun and journal found in his backpack thrown out. Prosecutors say the journal includes bitter writings against for-profit health insurers.

Lawyers for Mangione claim he was not read his Miranda Rights before he was searched, after his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Prosecutor say under Pennsylvania law, officers had a legal right to search the backpack.

Mangione’s arrest came after that 911 call after he was spotted at a McDonald’s. The 911 call was released for the first time last week in court:

McDonald’s Manager: “I have a customer here that some other customers were suspicious of, that he looked like the CEO shooter from New York.”

911 Dispatcher: “You said black jacket?”

McDonald’s Manager: “Uh huh. A tan beanie.”

911 Dispatcher: “OK.”

McDonald’s Manager: “And like the blue medical mask.”

Mangione was last in court on Thursday. Proceedings in his ongoing pretrial hearing were canceled on Friday due to Mangione feeling sick.
