SAVANNAH, Ga. — This weekend, a wire malfunction led to smoke in the attic of a local home, resulting in the displacement of two residents.

The Savannah Fire Department (SFD) announced via social media that an electrical issue had forced two individuals to leave their residence after smoke was detected coming from the attic. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Using this event as a teaching moment, the SFD emphasized the importance of being aware of fire risks associated with home electrical systems.

“We urge everyone to inspect their electrical wiring for any signs of wear or damage and to avoid overloading outlets,” the SFD advised. “Ensure your smoke alarms are operational for early detection.”

Backing up their warning, the SFD referenced National Fire Protection Association data, revealing that approximately 32,260 home fires are caused each year by electrical distribution and lighting issues, with 30% occurring between November and February.
